BAYLES RENOVATION
Location: West Vancouver, BC
Year: 2024
It has been a privilege to work on the Bayles House this past year. Originally designed by renowned Canadian architect Arthur Erickson in 1973, Team Pacific recently completed a first phase renovation that maintains the essence of Erickson's vision while adapting it to modern living. Nestled on the cliffs amongst the trees in West Vancouver, the home is a testament of Erickson's ability to seamlessly integrate architecture with nature.
The team at Hunter Office Architecture led the renovation's architecture and design. Committed to preserving Erickson’s legacy, this phase involved updating the home’s structural and interior finishes to meet the needs of contemporary life, all while respecting its mid-century modern roots. The original design, with its bold use of concrete, wood, and glass, was meticulously preserved, ensuring that the home still captures the spirit of Erickson’s iconic style.
Key updates included modernizing the kitchen with custom cabinetry, new appliances, and a functional layout. The bathrooms were updated with new, clean finishes. The owner had hoped to put in a soaker tub in the principal bathroom, and during the demo phase we uncovered the original tub that had been covered up over the years. Fresh tile and new fixtures make this zone one of the best features in the home where you can sit back, relax, and feel connected with nature.
Outside the home, an outdoor kitchen was built on the pool deck to connect every day living with the exterior spaces. Custom exterior grade sinks, cabinetry, and cooking zones were seamlessly integrated into the deck and sightlines so as not to distract from the views when overlooking the outdoor space from any of the windows.
Erickson’s Bayles House is a tribute to the Canadian architect’s philosophy of creating spaces that foster a deep connection to the environment. We are honoured to have been a part of this renovation that ensures that it remains a functional, modern masterpiece for years to come.
